The measurable size of home advantage, how it varies by league, and what happened to it over the last decade.
Home advantage in major European football has historically been worth somewhere around a third to half a goal per match. That is a substantial edge and it is priced into every market you see, which means the question is never whether it exists but whether the market has it right for this fixture.
It varies enormously by league and by club. Long away trips, hostile atmospheres, unusual pitch dimensions and altitude all amplify it. Leagues with short travel distances and neutral atmospheres show less. Within a league, some clubs consistently show a much larger home effect than the average, and that is a genuine, exploitable pattern.
The trend over the past decade has been downward across most major leagues, and it fell sharply during matches played without crowds, which is about as clean a natural experiment as football offers. Models trained on older data systematically overrate home sides.
