End-of-season fixtures where the table has already decided everything, and why these are the hardest matches to price.
A statistical model reads the last ten matches and prices the eleventh. What it cannot read is that one side is safe in mid-table with nothing to play for and the other is fighting relegation on the final day. That gap between form and incentive is the clearest weakness of any purely statistical approach.
The strongest patterns are well known. Mid-table sides with nothing to play for underperform their ratings in the last three weeks. Teams already relegated sometimes play with freedom and beat sides who need the points. Sides with a cup final the following week rotate heavily and lose matches they should win.
This is one of the few areas where a human reading the table beats the model outright. If you want a genuine edge, the last month of a season is where to look, and the required work is simply knowing what each team still needs.
