Four selections at 1.80 each looks like a modest bet. Combined it pays 10.5, which feels generous — until you notice that if each leg is genuinely a 55% shot, all four land only about 9% of the time. The price went up ten-fold; your chance went down eleven-fold.
The deeper problem is the margin. The bookmaker's edge is applied to every leg and then multiplied. A 5% margin on a single becomes roughly 22% on a four-fold. Accumulators are the most profitable product a bookmaker sells, which is exactly why they are the most heavily promoted.
