Half Time / Full Time Betting: High Odds, Harder Than It Looks

How HT/FT pricing works, why the draw-to-home option is the most misread bet on the coupon, and when the market is worth playing.

Half time / full time asks you to call the result at the break and at the end. Nine combinations, prices from around 1.60 for a dominant home team leading throughout to 30.00 or more for an away comeback. The long prices are what attract people and the margin is where the bookmaker makes its money.

The combination worth understanding is draw-to-home. It typically prices around 5.00 to 6.50 and it happens far more often than that suggests, because a favourite failing to break down a defensive side in the first half is one of the commonest patterns in football. When a strong home team meets a side that sets up deep, this is often the sharpest way to back them.

The market's weakness is that it compounds two correlated predictions and prices them with a heavy margin, often 10% or more. Use it when you have a specific read on how a match will unfold, not as a way to get a bigger number on a team you simply fancy.

Key points

Frequently asked

What does draw / home mean?
The match is level at half time and the home side wins by full time. It is the most common of the 'changed result' outcomes and often the best value in the market.
Is HT/FT better value than the match result?
Only when you have a genuine view on the shape of the game. The extra margin means a vague opinion costs you more here than in the 1X2 market.
Which HT/FT outcome is rarest?
Away leading at half time and the home side winning, or the mirror image. Both are priced very long and both deserve to be.
