Betting Terms Glossary: Fifty Words Explained Plainly

From accumulator to yield, every term you will meet, defined without jargon.

Betting has a vocabulary that is often used to sound authoritative rather than to communicate. Most of it describes simple ideas, and knowing the words removes a barrier that is largely artificial.

The essential ones are these. Stake is what you risk. Odds are the price. Implied probability is one divided by the decimal odds. Margin is how much the bookmaker has taken out. Value is when your probability beats the price. Edge is the size of that gap. Yield is profit divided by total staked. Variance is the swing around your expected result.

The rest are mostly market names or shorthand. Accumulator combines selections. Handicap gives a head start. Draw no bet refunds on a draw. Void means the bet is cancelled and the stake returned. Closing line is the final price before kickoff. Chasing is increasing stakes to recover a loss, and it is the only one on this list you should never do.

Key points

Frequently asked

What does 'value' mean in betting?
That your estimated probability of an outcome is higher than the probability implied by the price. It is the only reason to place a bet.
What is the difference between odds and probability?
Odds are the price offered; probability is the chance of the event. Divide one by the decimal odds to move between them.
What does 'void' mean?
The bet is cancelled and your stake returned, usually because a match was abandoned or a player did not participate.
